Tokyo Steakhouse in Ankeny

I don't usually leave reviews but my family and I had an excellent experience here. Great food, great service, very clean, and the cook was wonderful.

I had never been to a Japanese Steakhouse before but the food was excellent. Both the cook and the waiter were fantastic. We try to go here at least once a month, however the 75$ for 2 bill is a tad to high to go more often, otherwise we definitely would.

Saturday night, date night per the usual we opted to give this place a second chance. Our 1st trip to Tokyo was during their grand opening, we were thrilled that Ankeny was adding a shushi place other than Water Front. End result..... less than sub par. Their shushi reminds me of a cheep Chinese buffet. Never again. Strike two.... their will not be a third. So unless you don't know what good shushi taste like dont go here.

Sushi was very good but the wait on Saturday nite was very long, busy nite.

It was my first time ordering from here. I ordered a firework sushi roll. The taste was good, but it wasn't crisp like you would expect a fried roll to be. I think because they drowned it in a lot of sauce. The rice inside was also overcooked and a bit mushy. The taste was great, just the texture could use some work. Since it was my first time, I'll consider trying again. Although, I felt $13 for a pretty small roll was a little high. I get bigger rolls from my favorite place for less.Update: I did try again, this time I tried the Victoria Secret roll. It was AMAZING! I have ordered it twice since then. Still not happy paying $14 for a roll, but it's soooooo good. Updating from 3 to 4 stars.

The food is always high quality and the wait times are quick.

Great place to eat. I go at least once a week and the servers have my order memorized! Service is friendly and crazy fast (food is usually out within 5 minutes of ordering.) The sushi lunch special is a great deal and tastes amazing.

Worth the 30 minute drive from Ames! Best sushi I’ve had in Iowa and the servers are great.

I ordered numerous items to go for lunch with a friend today. Absolutely awesome. The girl that took my order was a sweetheart, made sure I had plenty of sauces to go with the order. My friend and I had a fabulous lunch thanks to Tokyo.

Very solid hibachi place. And they don't skimp on the "yum yum" sauce. Pro-tip: Take people there for their birthdays.

Got the new york strip hibachi and it is amazing. The yummy sauce it comes with is just perfect. First time trying sushi and it was a great experience. I will be back here for sure. Great service to top it all off.

Had a good experience here with the kids. Food was good and not over priced for the amount of food and quality.

We had lunch and were not expecting much, but WOW, were we ever surprised! The menu and food selection were incredible, the food was beyond awesome and the service outstanding. The fact that the prices are very reasonable shouldn't matter, especially if you value an excellent dining experience.

The food was ok. The chef was decent, and the busser was great. The waitress/hostess was very unfriendly and seemed inconvenienced to be waiting on us. The parking lot is terrible--would highly recommend parking at Ankeny Diner and walking over.

It was my wife n I 6month wedding anniversary, we decided to try something we never had, the food was perfect and super filling..the waiter was very nice and super chill..

Went here for my father in laws birthday and we had a blast! Family was all laughing and having a great time. Food was well prepared and amusing. Plus they do some super fun stuff for birthdays.

Best hibachi in the Des Moines area. The scallops are on a phenomenal and the filet is tender. Don't get chicken. It just isn't as good as the other options. Love!!♥️♥️

Food was really good. They didn't shoot any drinks in our mouth like they usually do. The nephews really like it when they do that.

It was great. Came in shortly before closing lunch and still got great food and service.

Server extremely rude, upset that we came in for lunch and they were closing in a half hour. Made a point to tell us they were closing. Won’t return, they should be happy with their patrons not rude to them.

Never been here. This is the only way to get this off my list. I keep selecting never been to this place but to no avail,it just keeps coming back. I'm sure this is nice but NEVER WAS HERE!!!!!!!!!

This is absolutely the best place in ankeny for quality sushi. The chef is an artist in presentation and flavor.

I love Hibachi but I usually pass because of the big price and small portions. This place gives you bigger portions. First time ever there. Excellent customer service and friendly staff. Everyone is very nice and polite. You can tell the place is well managed.

My husband and I love going here when we can to get some bento boxes. Staff is always friendly and treats us like family! Never have had a problem or bad dining experience or feel rushed. Great for hibachi or sushi! If you enjoy fruity mixed drinks, you have to try the madam butterfly. So good!

I’ve been a sushi chef for three years and never in my life have I had to pay so much for flavorless disappointing food. My boyfriend and I ordered a few dishes and hands down they tasted like it was cooked in dirty dish water with a pinch of salt. Almost all of the vegetables listed in the menu were missing and the ones that were there were definitely on the verge of turning bad. The sushi rice was stiff and old. They had obviously kept it refrigerated and was not made fresh to order. That or it’s poorly made sushi rice.We ended up taking my yakisoba home where I seasoned it and added the vegetables that were missing. You can absolutely make this better at home without trying. There are significantly better places to go to spend your money. It’s not here.

My family & I were their for a birthday dinner & we had a very very rude chef. He was taking down our orders & we were ordering some food off the menu for the back kitchen & our chef made a very unnecessary comment saying “if you are not here to order Hibachi, why are you here when you can be eat out at KFC or McDonald’s?” And started laughing at us. I have never met someone so rude & be comfortable disrespecting customers like that. I am very upset and I was looking forward to eat the food & since he made that comment, my family & I left. No one likes to be treated that way with unnecessary rude comments.

This place is fantastic and the staff is always wonderful. They are handling service during COVID excellent, in my opinion. Their set up for pickup has been so easy, safe and clean. We can’t wait until things go back to normal so we can have large gatherings in their back hibachi rooms again. But until then we appreciate how easy they are making contactless pickup in their entryway. I highly recommend the hibachi, their fried rice is my favorite in the city, and the JB roll is an all-time favorite.

The food was incredible, I went with a large group and was able to try a number of items. The salmon the steak and the shrimp were all great and although I'm not a fan of sushi my family that is really enjoyed it! On top of that it's all cooked right in front of by a chef with a great personality 👍

Most folks can probably make better Tokyo dishes at home

The Food was fire but the service was horrible. I reserved for 7pm and did not get to sit down until 8pm. And witch I hope you are reading this, cause when I said it was cold I meant that. And why your Hibachi cooks dont do the same tricks. Maybe I wanted to catch some food with my mouth.

We had the Hibachi grill and the service was good with plenty of food to fill you up and take home. They can do with maybe an update on the decor.

NY strip was pretty good as was the soup. Rice was burnt and they slathered it in yum yum sauce which was not only not necessary but disgusting. The server working my tab was terrible. I needed one of my beers separated which I clearly stated. This proceeded to cause not just confusion for her but a display ridiculousness. Slamming a tray, throwing stuff in the trash aggressively and what I can only describe as a “mean mugging”. Won’t be back, save your money and go elsewhere.

We love coming here. Hibachi is always fun for the kids! Food is excellent and super friendly staff!

Great place! The Hibachi experience is pleasant and visually entertaining, with the flames and knife juggling. Portions are more than generous, and the food is VERY tasty. It's not exactly cheap, but won't break the bank, either. It's great for that special occasion dinner date.

Just left Tokyo and the food was awesome! The sushi and hibachi were very delicious, and service was great, highly recommended!

Usually this place is pretty awesome but we didn't enjoy out last visit. It was prom night so tables filled quickly. Staff was visibly upset when guests arrived early, arrived late, or had been seated for 5 minutes and didn't know what to order. It made what is usually a fun and exciting environment feel tense and rushed. Our hibachi chef must have been overworked because our meal usually consists of some fun interaction and jokes with people at the same table. We got none of that.

Had a very rude server last night! chef was just ok. Food was good. I doubt this place will be in ankeny very much longer.

Foods great. Always spend more than I should. Would love to see the place get a face lift, so dark in there.

This is a hidden gem of Ankeny! This is my family’s go to restaurant in Ankeny when we want a great night out for dinner with great tasting food and excellent service, we have eaten there multiple times and have yet to have a bad experience. Staff is always great with our girls and sushi is fresh tasting and delicious, girls love the hibachi grill.

Food and service are great, little on the pricey side but get a very good size portion of food. Well worth the price.

Fun place. Relatively cheap. Good sushi and meal.
